Remittance in Niger: effects on economic growth and on migrants’ left behind

Abstract Remittances have long been an important source of revenue for many people in the Republic Niger. In order to fight poverty, young choose migrate. 2019, a total 293 million U.S. dollars was sent by migrants their relatives Niger; that is 3% Niger Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The objective this study analyze effects remittances on economic growth and significance its contribution improving living condition migrants’ left behind families. applies three-step econometric procedure followed survey usage city Tahoua (Republic Niger). also performed some tests residuals accuracy prediction model. empirical results showed no run relationship between remittances, gross fixed capital formation However, short-run, revealed existence causal effect growth. On other hand, conducted 45.7% received remittance used food expenditure, 19.3% education 10.36% health expenditure 5.4% allocated house rent. importance behind. It indicates 14% respondent wish see another family member engage migration.
